My Favorite Holiday: Valentine's Day

Posted by

I wanted to dedicate this entire week to celebrating my favorite holiday, Valentine's Day. As I started thinking about my v-day love campaign, I found myself reminiscing on some of my favorite "Good Things" from Martha Stewart Living.

Birch Love Vase

Flowers are a timeless way to say "I love you," and this birch-bark vase with carved initials from our February issue (created by floral designers at Prudence Designs and Events in New York City) is a beautiful twist on a classic. Great presentation is key to a great gift.

Finish with a Bow

Even if they don't have a sweetie to snuggle up with on Valentine's Day, gift recipients will still have sweet dreams if you give them cozy flannel sheets wrapped in a luxurious pink bow. My friends loved receiving this gift last year.

This Good Thing is so simple, yet impactful. Personalize the stenciled letters to make them extra-special. These would make great gifts to surprise my coworkers with when they get to the office Thursday. This Week's Discovery: Sol y Luna Coolers

Just in time for the bridge between picnicking and tailgating season, I spotted these beautiful leather-clad coolers, thermoses, and ice buckets at Sag Harbor's new home decor store, Monc XIII. I love the way that Spanish company Sol y Luna took an everyday, ugly object (the basic cooler) and elevated it into something truly special.

The company hand-stitches all of its products (there's even a leather-wrapped wheelbarrow!), and most come in two rich brown shades. Wouldn't they make perfect housewarming or newlywed gifts?

Mother's Day Makeover

Posted by

She deserves appreciation year round, but Mother's Day is definitely the time to to pay her back -- if only slightly -- for all of those years of love, encouragement, and support.

Instead of the usual flowers or perfume, why not give her a lasting gift...a simple, chic decorative accent that she can enjoy every day.

Here are some of my favorite ideas for a small but memorable Mother's Day makeover...

Black-and-white images of nature form photo cubes, which can also be used as bookends. The photographs aren't glued to the cube. Instead, a special gel is used to transfer the images onto blocks. Transfers last longer than paper photographs, so this decoration can remain a fixture for years. (marthastewart.com)

Give her bar a stylish update. Two disparate pieces -- a cabinet and a desk -- become one, thanks to the clever use of wallpaper. The sophisticated pattern makes a beautiful backdrop for a collection of glasses. To get this look, adhere a wallpaper panel above the desk and mount the cabinet. Personalize Mom's desk with a free-form stone-shaped blotter; it's a great way to protect the surface or to designate a writing area. Plus it takes just minutes to make: Outline the shape you want on the back of the leather, and cut it out with heavy-duty scissors
