In this living room peach tones compliment the warm tones of grey and wood floors.

Similarly, beige and warm pinks are a beautiful and subtle combination.

I love this image from apartmenttherapy.com. It is such a great example of how to mix a subtle neutral, like the coat of french grey on the walls, with a modern twist - like the gilded frame and artwork on the walls.

Neutral doesn't always have to be bland. These dark grey walls have a bit of a navy undertone, which the different shades of orange in the oriental rugs, upholstery and book bindings compliment beautifully. Image from apartmenttherapy.com

I love color but my husband likes neutrals. How can I bring color and brightness into my space while keeping it neutral?

Neutrals come in a variety of shades both warm and cool and provide a great foundation for colorful furnishings and accent pieces. Together, they balance each other out: a pop of color keeps a neutral backdrop from looking bland. If you already have a neutral walls, look for soft goods like rugs, curtains, roman shades, pillows and upholstery in bright, complimentary colors. Or, if it's your furniture and soft goods that are neutral, painting your walls is the perfect (and easiest) opportunity to bring color into your home. The Martha Stewart website has an amazing gallery of Neutral Rooms that I think will provide you with endless inspiration - good luck!

Just crazy beautiful.

If you happen to be at the Martha Stewart offices on a slow day (not often), you might find me poring over my ever-expanding stack of auction catalogs. There are few things I adore more than soaking up the images of exquisite, one-of-a-kind pieces -- much less entire collections of them. It is like window shopping with a very refined eye.

Rizolli's newly published book "The Yves Saint Laurent-Pierre Berge Collection" - (subtitled "the Sale of the Century," with good reason) - takes the art of cataloging to an entirely new level. Beyond my wildest dreams I could not imagine such a whimsical and resplendent collection.

The bonanza of clear plastic containers nearly sent me over the edge. All I want to do is organize.

I used to have to bring home tons of these sponges in my suitcase for Alexis when Martha and I would travel to Japan. Now, I don’t have to.

I am so happy that Muji is just blocks from my new apartment. It is one of my all-time favorite design emporiums. About ten years ago, Martha and I were in Japan and she introduced me to this fantastic store. I remember filling one entire suitcase with white sponges, clear plastic boxes, the absolute perfect cotton cardigans in ten colors, and alarm clocks that look great on any bedside table (among many other fabulous things). Over the years, Martha and I have traveled to Japan many times and each time we have visited our favorite haunt. Now all I have to do is run down the street. How lucky am I?
