The Great Gatsby Premiere
Posted by Kevin Sharkey
The first evening in May, I was fortunate enough to accompany Martha to the premiere of Baz Luhrman's highly anticipated film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Screened at Lincoln Center with an after party at the Plaza, this memorable night was marked by such chic company, glamorous movie scenes, and period decoration that I felt literally transported to a different era in New York. No complaints here!
This is Lincoln Center. I have never seen so many people there at one time. This is the view from the red carpet. Between the plaza and all the balconies, there must have been thousands of people there.
Walking the red carpet (or in this case blue) can be a long process. It took almost an hour to get through because there were so many photographers, television commentators, and reporters.
This is Martha giving interviews to reporters. To her left is Leonardo di Caprio and to her right is Carey Mulligan.
Carey looked beautiful in her red dress.
This is Katie Berry, Creative Director of Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine in front of the Step and Repeat.
Martha was able to catch up with her friend Jenna Lyons, who is responsible for all the design at J. Crew.
Martha and her old friend Leo were able to catch up just before we went in to the green room before the movie started.
The theater was packed and everyone was excited for the show to begin.
Baz Luhrmann was giving an introduction to the movie and instructed us all to put on our 3D glasses.
After the movie, we all went to the Plaza Hotel for the afterparty. Here is Martha with our friend Richie Notar who has just opened a fantastic new restaurant called Harlow on Park Avenue and 56th Street.
There was a band that played music for the party that perfectly suited the era of the movie.
The decorations in the ballroom were magical.
Even the staff working the party were dressed to match the theme. Here Martha is surrounded by a group of waiters all dressed in clothes from Brooks Brothers.
Here Martha joins her old friend Sacha Baron Cohen and his wife Isla Fisher, who played Myrtle Wilson in the movie.
Martha, Katie Berry, and I had a fantastic evening and I highly recommend the movie to all who have not seen it.
