An Italian State of Mind

Posted by

I recently booked a summer trip to Italy, and I’m getting increasingly excited for strolls by famous ancient architectural sites, impeccable Italian style, and naturally, coconut gelato. But while I’m stateside and patiently awaiting my vacation, I’ve been turning to some easy methods of getting me in the Italian mindset, starting with my Netflix queue. I thought it would be fun to create a list of must-see films set in that most cinematic of cities, Venice, to get me even more excited and inspired. These movies are all packed with drama, mystery, romance, and of course, style.

One of three James Bond films set in the beautiful northern Italian city, Moonraker (1979) features an incredible chase scene in a gondola.

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) taps into Venice's dark side with mystery, lies, and murder. The preppy 1950s styles are definitely a pull, too.

Death in Venice (1971), based on a 1912 novella, places the city in the midst of a cholera epidemic. It's chilling and dramatic, but depicts the city in a remarkably dark way.

Senso (1954) is melodramatic, seductive, and romantic. Perfect for getting in the Venice mindset.

Everyone Says I Love you (1996) is a light and romantic film with a star-studded cast - check out this beautiful shot of Woody Allen and Julia Roberts sitting by one of the city's canals.

Katharine Hepburn is perfect in Summertime, a 1955 film about a single secretary from Ohio who travels to Venice for a summer vacation. Bonus: her Italian love interest is an antiques dealer!
