2013 is the year of the snake, and Bulgari is celebrating in high style. I was walking past the storied house's Fifth Avenue flagship and stopped in my tracks to stare at the striking serpentine light installation coiled around the building.
Turns out the outsized reptile is just the beginning of a series of celebrations for Bulgari, which has created snake-themed baubles since the '40s (remember Elizabeth Taylor's diamond Serpenti watch in Cleopatra?). The First up: a Serpenti exhibit opening February 9th at the Fifth Avenue store, which will featured snake-inspired jewels from past and present. The store will also create light panels with images of the legendary women who've worn the collection over the years, from Taylor to Verushka to Marisa Berenson.
And if taking home a diamond-encrusted reptiles isn't in the cards, there's also a new book from Assouline dedicated to the Serpenti Collection, which hits shelves in March. There's something deliciously decadent about flipping through pages and pages of slightly sinister, over-the-top baubles.
