On My Bookshelf: "Rose Cumming: Design Inspiration"

When Jeffrey Simpson's new monograph "Rose Cumming: Design Inspiration" crossed my desk, I got completely lost in the pages of sketches, hand-drawn patterns, interiors and portraits. The thoughtfully assembled book captures one of the design world's true originals, a vivacious, larger-than-life personality who always left a trail of glamour in her wake.

A New Yorker by way of Australia, Cumming was a dealer, decorator, and fabric designer who got her start in 1921. Along with a biography of her career, there are images of cocktail parties with James Aster and Dorothy Draper, a pearl-draped Cumming in the pages of "Vogue," and her famous drawing room, covered in sparkling 18th Century Chinese silver wallpaper.

I love this quote from Bunny Williams in the book, which captures the fabulousness of Cummings' taste:

"What was so astounding about her taste was that it was so off the wall. I mean it was reptiles, and there was a sort of Hollywood chic to it, but then there was sort of the macabre thing going on, and none of it was consistent, but they were things you had never seen before .."
