I just love the vintage dish that the store's business cards sit in.

White Trash has such great finds that I had to stop and admire most of the objects. Thank goodness the space isn't too big or I would have been there all day.

There is my desk lamp! And it sits next to an Arne Jacobsen Cylinda salad bowl.

What’s really amazing about shopping in New York City is that you never know what you will find. You might be searching for a chair and come home with a lamp or searching for a lamp and come home with fabric. The other day I was lucky enough to find exactly what I was looking for: a desk lamp and a chair. No fabric. Although I now need some fabric to reupholster the chair I found. But more on that in a moment.

Right near Second Avenue on 5th Street is a great little shop called White Trash (whitetrashnyc.com). Owner Stuart Zamsky runs this small space his own way: opening later in the day in order to shop estate sales and moving inventory fast, as the space is tiny, tiny, tiny. Blink and something might get sold from under you.

So, when I went to see what was being offered the other day, I knew I had to act fast if I wanted this chair and lamp. Without missing a beat, I whisked the items into the back of a car and off I went.

The  lamp is perfect as is but I want to ebonize the chair and have new cushions made. Fabric ideas? Anyone? Anyone?

  • The chair looks like an important piece of design. Any info?

Upholstery: a nubby Chanel jacket tweed would be nice.

  • I think the chair, once ebonized, could look great in duck egg blue suede - or bright yellow velvet.

  • Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the tip on White Trash - I saw some great 1940 Game Tiles I am considering (if he still has them).

Regarding your chair - how about "Barley" Sunbrella? Don't laugh until you try it....hints of black, an overall stripe, but subtle - and no one will even imagine it is Sunbrella it is so soft! At least think about it!

  • I love the chair. Excellent choice.
