Here in New York it seems that we've skipped spring altogether and entered into summer. Naturally, the books that jumped from my shelf this week celebrate a warmer climate and the joy of living en plein air. One is a look at old world style, "The Villa Kerylos," and the other a more modern take:"Hollywood Style" (Rizzoli, available at Amazon).
1 The door is fabulous painted terracotta red and adorned with bronze-studded panels and door-knockers.
4 The octagon-shaped pool in this Greek bath is exquisite. Some details I like: the seat carved from marble along the pool's edge and the alcove in the rear.
6 An innovative lighting technique above the shower here - an open-work screen known as a 'claustra.'
Last summer I visited the South of France with Martha and stopped by the Villa Kerylos, which had been recommended by our good friend Stephen Sills. The Villa faces the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, a seaside village located between Nice and Monaco. Extremely beautiful and the crème de la crème of vacation destinations. It was designed in the early 1900s by two enthusiasts of Grecian architecture and culture and made to resemble an ancient Greek palace. I felt like we had stepped back in time while touring the grounds.
2 A Hawaiian-themed guest bedroom embellished with vintage home accessories from Honolulu - the paper cocktail umbrellas hanging upside-down from the ceiling are quite imaginative.
3 I'm a sucker for carved-wood furniture in the Chinese-export style. Wicker and orchids also a must.
4 Lovely campaign desk - but the first thing I noticed in this photo was the bright blue rug. It works really well with the beige and wood tones.
8 The door frame to the right is festooned with a mosaic of seashells. I'd love to get my hands on the table linens, as well.
10 I'd be amiss to say I didn't love the Frank Lloyd-Wright chairs, but if I could take one thing from this room it would be the Moroccan hanging lamp.
12 I am definitely loving the simplicity of lines and color in this bedroom - it looks so peaceful. Big points for upholstering the headboard in raw-silk.
13 On the other end of the spectrum, this bedroom speaks to the English country-side with layers of patterns and textures and an ornate canopy bed.
Hollywood Style was fun to flip through again, as I had forgotten how many fabulous private homes it features inside. I found a lot of inspiration for Alexis' apartment as well as my own - especially loving a gorgeous travertine-topped Paul McCobb table that I included a photo of (probably because it's the same one I have, or at least very close)!
What places inspire you to design?

Kevin - what is a "campaign desk?" That's a term I'm unfamiliar with. A bit of research has produced varying information...

Hi Kevin
Commenting from Sydney, Australia on the most beautiful autumn Monday of our ANZAC weekend. Sadly, my AFL team is losing and I've found your wonderful Decorating blog on Martha! Please, please, I just have to know - where does one find the beautiful decorative corals on silver plinths, which gently support the books "The Villa Kerylos," and "Hollywood Style"? Just adore all you and Martha do.
