One solution to bedside lighting is using adjustable arm lamps placed on either side of the bed. They come in both table and floor sizes. If you are reluctant to hard-wire a sconce, this can be a great option for you. These lamps allow you to direct the light where you need it and are great for reading or working in bed. They will definitely add a modern feel to your room. If you find a pair you like a tag sale, I suggest painting them in a wonderful enamel color to brighten up the space. Have fun!
