Stores like ABC Carpet & Home are few and far between. Every time I walk into the lovely, historical building they occupy in Manhattan's Flatiron district, I am overwhelmed (in a good way) by all of the exotic and vibrant items they have in store. They are a breath of fresh air in this concrete jungle - serving as a refuge for the design and travel-obsessed, alike.
ABC Carpet & Home has been a beloved NYC establishment since 1897. I love it for all of the inspiration I find while browsing their endless selection and roaming their countless floors and departments. It's similar to walking through a bazaar or open-air market in a foreign country - you just never know what you'll find!
If you want to get to the meat of this store, then let's talk about rugs. Today, ABC holds the prestigious title of being the largest retailer of rugs and carpets in the entire world - as if being a cutting edge home-design store wasn't enough. They have a vast selection of styles in an even more diversified assortment of sizes - from a bath mat to a rug large enough for Buckingham Palace, as well as custom sizes. I love their options in the over-dyed, antique, broadloom, and textured styles, as well as their gorgeous oriental rugs - they also have one of my favorite textile designers, Madeline Weinrib (go to www.madelineweinrib.com for more info).
In 2003, ABC started a new "green" initiative called ABC Home & Planet, which encourages people to buy "socially responsible" and sustainable products, making their homes - and the world - a more healthy, pure, and natural place. I love their line of ABC goodwood products, which has created over 650 unique pieces of furniture using sustainable, recycled, reclaimed and salvaged wood. ABC also plants a tree for every goodwood product they sell, in an effort to reduce global warming. Their big picture? Plant 5 billion trees in the next 50 years! In an industry that's largely based on appearances, it's wonderful to see a company with heart that puts its passion before trends.
With all of their lovely product, however, it's very easy to see how they could be trendsetters! Their home accessories department includes lovely dishware and decorative accessories, and ethnic items from around the globe - they even have lovely scarves, apparel, and jewelry for sale. As far as furniture goes, they have one of the most unique selections in the city - from antique pieces to contemporary, they have it all - in styles designed by renowned designers such as Mitchell Gold, Tom Dixon, and Cartell (see photos). As I walked through the first floor vendors, I even noticed an in-store cafe - now there's really no reason to leave at all!
